What is True Item Level?

If someone asks you what your "til" is and you stare blankly at your screen, then I'll fill you in. This add-on discovers the item level average of whoever you mouse over (as long as they are within inspect range), as well as place your own true item level under Blizzard's in your character frame.

Why do I want True item Level?

Blizzard's item level is obtained by averaging your highest equipment (including what you have in your bag and bank). This is inherently flawed.

Just because you have a dps set with an avg item level of over 9000 does not mean that you can successfully heal a raid in sub heroic healing gear. Blizzard's item level deceives players into thinking that they are ready for content that they really are not geared for. Here is a real life example:

On my druid, I first geared feral. I got the item level up to 340 which is enough to make me confident in my ability to dps any heroic. When I started working on my resto set, my resto gear was 80 item points below my feral set. Blizzard's item level indicator being as limited as it is didn't know to tell me that I wasn't ready to heal cata dungeons, and insisted that my item level was still 340. I was smarter than the system, and now you can be too!

How does it work?

True Item Level creates an average number, or TiL (true item level), from the item levels of everything you or your mouse over have equipped. Heirloom (aka BOA) gear is not included in the averaging, as all heirloom gear has an item level of 1 and would incorrectly skew the results against you. Shirts and tabards are also exempt from calculations. I've even gone a step further to notify you of any heirloom gear and gear with resilience rating.

No clunky pages of code. No memory blasting databases. No subjective or over complex algorithms.

It's that simple.

Anything I should know?

True Item Level was designed to be a quick, effortless, and optimized way to see someones actual item average at a glance. In order to keep up with this goal, True Item Level will not run in the following situations:

  • You are currently inspecting someone
